Fractured Patella

A fractured patella (knee cap) usually occurs from a blunt trauma to the knee (i.e. falling on a bent knee, being struck by an object in knee), and is usually diagnosed by a x-ray ordered by your physician.  Depending on the severity of the fracture, early intervention includes immobilization, rest and ice.  Once this phase has passed (usually determined by your physician) seeking skilled physical therapy is an important step to the recovery process.  Often the knee can become tight, and atrophy (muscle breakdown) can set in causing weakness and impaired biomechanics.  Our physical therapist is trained in advanced manual therapy techniques to improve your joint mobility/range of motion, and to guide you through the proper progression for return to activity.

Associated Symptoms:

  • Knee swelling
  • Reduced range of motion
  • Difficulty walking, squatting
