Proximal Radial Head Fracture

The radius is the smaller bone of the forearm that runs along the thumb side of the arm.  It has articulations with the humerus and the ulna near the elbow, and with the ulna and carpal bones at the wrist.  Fractures can occur from a fall on an outstretched arm, or a direct blow to that area.  If the injury does not require surgery, rest and immobilization are often prescribed to allow the bone to heal. This time of non-use can lead to muscle atrophy (wasting), joint stiffness, and decreased range of motion.  Physical therapy is important to ensure proper rehabilitation of the muscles and joints to return to normal function.

Associated symptoms:

  • Elbow pain
  • Forearm pain
  • Elbow stiffness
  • Weakness
  • Decrease elbow range of motion
  • Forearm hand numbness/tingling
  • Swelling
  • Pain with use
