Wrist/Hand Arthritis

Arthritis is the term used to describe joint pain or joint disease.  There are many forms of arthritis, with the most common being osteoarthritis (OA). OA is caused when the lining of joints are worn away and the bones then rub together. When present in our hands, it causes difficulty with fine motor movements of the hand.  It may cause misshapen joints, pain, and warmth within the affected areas.  Arthritis is usually caused by repetitive movements, or is the sequela to a previous injury.  As physical therapist we cannot reverse the arthritic changes that have already occurred, but we can help to reduce the surrounding soft tissue irritation, improve joint mobility, and overall function.

Associated Symptoms:

  • Wrist/hand/finger joint pain
  • Wrist/hand/finger joint stiffness
  • Wrist/hand/finger joint burning
  • Decreased grip strength
